  7. 2021 Toyota Tacoma Nightshade Edition

AutoNation Drive | Jan 14, 2021

The Toyota Tacoma has won over legions of fans thanks to its reliability and wide selection of available models. For 2021, Toyota has added one more to the mix. This is called the Nightshade Edition. Based on the Limited trim, it adds blacked-out trim pieces, special wheels and a unique grille, giving the dependable workhorse a more street-savvy look. Price as you see it here, with some extra options: $45,183 including delivery.

Under the hood is a proven 3.5-liter V6 with variable valve timing. This produces up to 278-horsepower and 265 lbs-ft of torque. It's connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission with a dual-range gearbox and your choice of rear or part-time four-wheel drive. The model we're testing here comes with the latter.

EPA rates economy at 18 miles to the gallon in the city and 22 on the highway.

The 5 foot bed includes a cargo liner. Ours featured an optional cargo mat. Power for working in the field is available as well.

Payload capacity maxes out at 1095 and you can tow up to 6,400 lbs.

The Double Cab configuration has enough space in the second row to fit up to three passengers. Fold down the seats for gear storage.

Up front the Tacoma Nightshade comes with all the standard goodies you get in other similarly-spec'd Tacoma. Power seat controls. An 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with XM Satellite radio and Navigation. Plug in a compatible device for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support. You can also charge devices on a contact charger.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across the Tacoma lineup - this includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, radar cruise control and lane detection. Our test car also included Blind Spot warning with cross traffic alerts and a rear-assist parking sonar.

On the road the Tacoma is surprisingly decent. Sure, it's a truck and it drives like one. But with adaptive cruise control and lane detection standard, it makes even the daily commute a little easier.

Four wheel drive here uses a traditional part-time system, which means most of the time you'll be driving in rear-wheel mode, only switching into 4hi or 4low when the situation demands it. Some other trucks in the segment offer automatic four-wheel drive modes that can give four-wheel power even when driving on paved surfaces. So consider if that's right for you.

The Toyota Tacoma has always been a smart choice for hauling, towing or adventuring into the mountains. With this new Nightshade Edition, it's also one of the best looking.

At AutoNation, we have more than 70,000 new and used vehicles available from coast-to-coast. Find the perfect vehicle, pick your options, and arrange for a test drive at your local Autonation Toyota dealer.
