Exterior view of the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition

Subaru's Outback is incredibly popular with buyers that love the great outdoors. For 2022 Subaru is getting its owners even deeper into the woods with the new Wilderness Edition. Why is this such a big deal? We have a first look, right now.

The Subaru Outback is a fun, flexible crossover with lots of great features. The new Wilderness Edition takes the adventurous Onyx XT trim and reworks the entire package to make it even more capable when the going gets tough.

The front and rear have been re-worked to give them better clearance. The suspension has been raised almost an inch, for a total of 9.5-inches ground clearance. The wheels feature a special matte-black finish, and they're wrapped in Geolandar All-Terrain tires for better grip in a variety of conditions. Even the wheel arches are larger and wider, to help protect the vehicle while blazing down the trail. An underbody skid plate is standard equipment.

On the Wilderness, the X-Mode Off-Road system has also been enhanced to operate at higher speeds.

Under the hood is the same 2.4-liter turbo-charged four cylinder that's found in the Outback XT. It puts down 260 horsepower and 277 lbs-ft of torque through Subarus Summetrical All-Wheel Drive system. A CVT is the only transmission option.

Around the vehicle are a number of color-coded indicators for easy access to tow points, and on the top they indicate tie-down points on the new ladder-frame roof rack. This new rack is designed to hold up to 700-lbs static, which means you can now mount a roof-tent for the ultimate adventure experience.

Inside the adventure continues with a full-size all-terrain tire in the back and the second row gets mud mats and USB connections for passengers.

Front-row gets upgraded seats with a new honeycomb pattern trimmed in the same copper color as the exterior trim. It's further carried onto the transmission selector, door panels and gauge cluster.

Like all current Outback models, the infotainment system is large portrait-oriented screen that's running the latest Subaru Starlink System. It will also feature Subaru's EyeSight system which includes adaptive cruise control and other safety enhancements. LED headlights and fog lights are standard as well.

With this new Outback Wilderness, Subaru aims to bring even more excitement to its lineup by building the most capable Subaru Outback ever. The 2022 Outback Wilderness will be available later this year at your local AutoNation Subaru dealer.
