Few people want to admit it, but if you're looking for the best vehicle to haul around a large family, there's still nothing better on the market than the tried-and-true minivan. As crossovers - especially mid-size three-row CUVs - have grown in popularity recently, the minivan selection has been whittled down.

The options that have remained in this segment are ideal family haulers, and that includes the 2020 Toyota Sienna. While the current Sienna dates back to the 2011 model year, Toyota has kept its minivan competitive in the segment with a number of updates over the years. With an all-new Sienna debuting for the 2021 model year, the big news for 2020 is the addition of a stylish appearance package called the Nightshade Edition, which we were able to spend a week with.

Despite a couple of minor styling updates, not much has changed since the current Sienna since it was introduced back in 2010 (for the 2011 model year), but even after a decade on the market, this minivan still looks good especially in the sporty SE trim level. The 2020 Toyota Sienna SE Nightshade Edition helps add a sportier flair with black body accents, black emblems, black wheels and a mesh front grille; all of these blacked-out features looked even better on this tester with its Super White paint color. The good news is that this package is only a $700 option, but the flip side of that coin is that the package is only offered on the SE and SE Premium trim levels, which start at $37,790**.

One reason the Sienna has remained competitive in spite of its age is that, above all else, a minivan must excel in comfort, technology and ease of use, and the 2020 Toyota Sienna comes through big time in all regards. Matching its exterior looks, the SE Nightshade Edition has a sporty vibe with a black leather interior (the only color offered) and exclusive white-faced instrument gauges. Even though the Nightshade Edition has an obvious focus on sporty looks, the SE trim level still delivers plenty of luxury with features like leather seating (leatherette third row), leather-wrapped steering wheel and contrasting stitching throughout the cabin. Our tester was equipped with the $3,815 SE Preferred Package that added push-button start, power moonroof, navigation and Toyota Connected Services with wi-fi connect.

The 2020 Sienna may not have fancy features like its newer rivals, but it does come standard with Toyota's latest Entune 3.0 with a seven-inch touchscreen as well as Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay integration (Android Auto users like myself are out of luck). Unique options for this tester included dual sunroofs (both open!) and the cool Driver Easy Speak that makes it easier to talk to rear passengers, and this Sienna also had the second-row captain's chairs with a long-slide feature that opens up generous amounts of added legroom. If you can't get comfortable in the 2020 Toyota Sienna, you're doing something wrong.

2020 Toyota Sienna Nightshade Edition Powertrain

Thanks to powertrain upgrades introduced back in 2018, the 2020 Toyota Sienna is one strong and efficient minivan that is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Combining power and efficiency, the new V-6 features Toyota's D-4S injection allowing the Sienna to produce 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, and this Sienna AWD has EPA-rated fuel economy estimates dropping to 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway*; of course, sticking with FWD does improve efficiency with official estimates of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg on the highway.

For now, the 2020 Toyota Sienna remains the only minivan on the market with all-wheel drive, but that advantage will end when Chrysler adds AWD to the 2021 Pacifica. AWD is available on the LE, SE, XLE and Limited trim levels, but regardless of whether it powers the front wheels or all four, the 2020 Sienna has an impressive maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. Understandably, the Sienna SE Nightshade Edition doesn't have any sporty suspension tuning to back up its looks, but it does have a smooth, car-like ride that's ready for any family vacation.

2020 Toyota Sienna Nightshade Edition Safety

Whether you opt for the FWD or AWD model, all versions of the 2020 Toyota Sienna receive a five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard safety equipment includes the Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense (radar cruise control, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert and automatic high beams), and the SE Preferred Package also adds rear park assist and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

2020 Toyota Sienna Nightshade Edition Overall

Year after year, Toyota has made changes to its aging Sienna minivan to keep this model relevant in a shrinking-but-important segment, and the 2020 Toyota Sienna is still a must-see for minivan buyers even up against newer rivals like the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Voyager/Pacifica.

The enhancements made over the years have ensured that this aging minivan remains competitive in the segment, but one area where the Sienna isn't exactly competitive is its starting price where the Sienna is priced higher than all but the Pacifica with a base MSRP of $31,640**. As mentioned above, the new Nightshade Edition option is only offered on the sportier SE trim that starts at $37,790**. Factoring in its all-wheel drive system and all of the other options, and the 2020 Toyota Sienna SE AWD Nightshade Edition used for this review had an as-tested price of $45,154.
