In an ongoing effort to dominate the hybrid market, Toyota continues its blitz of fuel-efficient vehicles. From cars, to crossovers, to minivans, everything is getting a hybrid drivetrain. And the latest addition to the party is the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. With the hybrid poster child already in its stable, Toyota borrowed the powertrain of the Prius to develop the Corolla Hybrid sedan, making it instantly one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the market as well as one of the most affordable hybrids.

While the overall shape of the 2020 Toyota Corolla is still conservative enough that it won't scare away traditional buyers, this is, by far, the best design for a Corolla sedan in the car's 54-year history. That starts up front with a face shared with the Corolla Hatchback, which features a low, wide grille and uniquely shaped headlights.

While the design is closer to the outgoing Corolla sedan instead of the hatchback's curvaceous body, it still has a sportier look from all angles including the narrow, horizontal taillights. The best part about the sedan's design compared to the hatchback's is that the four-door doesn't have the fake exhaust outlets like its cargo-friendly version. Speaking of different versions, if it wasn't for the blue Toyota logos and the Hybrid badges, the Corolla Hybrid looks identical to the non-hybrid Corolla sedan, which is a win for this small car.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is only available in a single trim level, and there are no packages available. Other than the choice of two interior colors and a handful of accessories, what you see is what you get. Fortunately, the Corolla Hybrid is based off the well-equipped LE trim level, which features a premium cloth material on the seats and eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It also offers some key upgrades from the non-hybrid Corolla LE, such as the seven-inch multi-information screen in the cluster, and the standard fitment of Apple CarPlay. Unfortunately for Android users, there's no Android Auto integration.

The cabin of the Corolla Hybrid isn't luxurious or sporty, but it also doesn't come off as cheap either. The impressive part about the Corolla Hybrid's design is that the addition of an on-board hybrid battery pack doesn't affect passenger or cargo space at all. The hybrid and non-hybrid Corolla sedan have identical capacities for passengers and cargo volume, and the Corolla Hybrid even has fold-down rear seats to accommodate bulkier gear.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Powertrain

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid uses the powertrain from the current Prius Liftback pairing a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine with a continuously variable transmission, 71-horsepower electric motor and a 600-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. Like the Prius, this powertrain delivers 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque, and most importantly, it is incredibly fuel efficient.

The EPA-rated fuel economy estimates for the Corolla Hybrid are 53 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway, which is actually better on the highway than the Prius allowing the Corolla Hybrid and Prius Liftback to both return 52 mpg in combined driving. And the Corolla Hybrid's efficiency is even better in the real world with this tester returning 54.4 mpg after burning a full tank of mostly city driving.

Unlike most hybrid versions of cars, the Corolla Hybrid drives just like its non-hybrid counterpart, which is more of a compliment to this car than an insult to hybrids. At no point do the brakes feel squishy, and the steering has a decent feel to it for entertaining drives. The bottom line is that while the Corolla Hybrid is an economy compact, it is still a fun and compliant car with a ride that is smooth and quiet.

No matter which version of the 2020 Toyota Corolla you choose - sedan, hatchback or hybrid - all of them received a five-star crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In addition to the seven airbags and Toyota's Safety Connect system (Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification), the Corolla Hybrid is fitted with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of advanced driver assistance features such as Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, lane departure with steering assist, adaptive cruise control and road sign assist. Toyota's Star Safety System is also standard and includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution with brake assist and Smart Stop Technology.

Despite gas prices being at record lows right now, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is a practical choice for a fuel-efficient vehicle regardless of market conditions. When gas prices get high again, this fuel-sipping sedan will be a great way to save extra money at the pump, but it doesn't come with any of the quirky compromises that competing hybrid compact cars deal with.

Best of all, the price premium isn't that much either as the Corolla Hybrid has a starting price of $23,100, which is about a $3,000 premium over the non-Hybrid Corolla LE off which it is based. The Toyota Corolla was already the world's best-selling nameplate, and now, thanks to the all-new Corolla Hybrid, it is now one of the world's most fuel-efficient nameplates. Bottom line, Toyota has created its strongest Corolla lineup of all time with a hatchback, sedan and now a fuel-efficient hybrid model, and that's not to mention the stylish design and impeccable safety.
