2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport Test Drive Review

By Omar Rana | August 06, 2020

Make no mistake: the Lexus RX invented the luxury crossover segment. This vehicle has been a fantastic success for the brand, and remains one of the best on the market.

That said, few critics are going to accuse Lexus of being on the bleeding edge of innovation. Often, the company is one of the last automakers to adopt new technology, and there's a good reason for that. Lexus is exceptionally patient, and waits to work the bugs out of emerging tech before implementing it, to protect the brand's trademark dependability. Now, given the legions of folks who swear by Lexus, not to mention the impressive amount of Lexus vehicles still on the road, it's hard to fault the strategy.

That said, let's take a look at the 2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport, which now gets features like a touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport Exterior

For the current model year, not much has changed for the Lexus RX in terms of exterior design. It still has a very elegant overall stance with an aggressive front end that’s highlighted by the familiar spindle grille. In my opinion, the exterior design of the Lexus RX is a great balance of sport and luxury, and the Lexus RX 350 F Sport I test drove for this review leans more toward the sportier side of things.

My test model came with the F Sport exterior styling cues which add edgier design elements like a unique front grille, front fenders, and black mirrors. Notably, there are also the amazing F Sport 20-inch wheels, and plenty of F Sport badges to let everyone know you’re driving a color version of the Lexus RX. Since it’s the edgiest of the RX lineup, the F Sport is the version I’d buy.

2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport Interior

Like all Lexus models, the interior of the 2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport is made with high-quality materials and is supremely comfortable. While Lexus interiors may not be as stylish as some competitors, the quality, fit, and finish is definitely unbeatable. Regardless of what kind of roads I drove on, there wasn’t a creak or rattle to be heard, and after spending a week in the cabin of the RX 350 F Sport, it’s easy to see why the company continues to win awards.

When it comes to tech, the big news for 2020 is that the RX has finally gotten a touchscreen display, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. An eight-inch touchscreen display is standard, but the massive 12.3-inch display is a very worthy upgrade. And if you’re a sound aficionado, you’ll likely want to upgrade to the outstanding Mark and Levinson sound system, as it’s one of the best in the business.

Of course, a lot of the buyers shopping in the luxury crossover segment do so for ample cargo capacity, and the 2020 Lexus RX doesn’t disappoint. You get a total of 16 cubic-feet behind the second row, and a total of 33 cubic-feet with the second row folded. If you’re looking for a third row, you’ll need to step up to the RX 350L, which also gives buyers the option to swap out the second seats for captain’s chairs.

2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport Performance

According to Lexus, the “F” in the Lexus RX 350 F Sport stands for Fuji Speedway. But that said, the RX 350 F Sport isn’t faster than any other Lexus RX 350, as all RX 350 models are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 making 295 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission which gives it the ability to run from zero to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 124 mph.

You have the option to circle through five drive modes including Eco, Normal, Custom, Sport S, and Sport S+ if you want to make a slight change to the driving dynamics or get better gas mileage. Speaking of gas mileage, the 2020 Lexus RX 350 F Sport averages an EPA-rated fuel economy of 19/26 mpg (city/highway).

While I’ve driven a ton of luxury crossovers this year, it’s worth noting that nothing rides as smooth as the Lexus RX.
