  7. 2020 Lexus LC 500 Convertible

Ever since the beautiful Lexus LC entered production in 2017, buyers have eagerly awaited the LC 500 convertible version. Now, it's finally here.

As a brand, Lexus has only had a few convertibles, including the amazing Lexus SC hard-top convertible, and the relatively short-lived IS Convertible. But given that the LC lives at the top of the Lexus lineup, it's entirely different from the open-air machines that came before it.

Simply put the 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible is absolutely gorgeous. Unlike previous Lexus convertibles, which were hardtops, the LC Convertible opts for a soft top. Most models will have two color options — Sand and Black — for the top, but the limited-production Inspiration Series will get a Marine color cloth. When you want to raise or lower the top, the process takes less than 20 seconds.

The front end is highlighted by the brand’s signature spindle grille, along with very sharp LED daytime running lights which Lexus calls “Arrowheads.”’ They run all the way into the actual lighting assembly itself, and it’s a cool effect. For the wheels, 20-inch units are standard, but 21-inch are available.

The Lexus LC is one of the few cars I love from every angle, and the rear stance is just fantastic. One interesting thing I want to make sure to point out is the styling of the taillights. There are actual mirrors inside them which repeatedly reflect the LEDs, providing a super cool three-dimensional look.

Besides the retractable top, when it comes to the cabin, the biggest difference between the Lexus LC Coupe and Convertible is the glass wind deflector. Which means it’s a fantastic place to be, as everything inside the Lexus LC lineup is made of the highest quality.

There’s an extensive use of leather, along with an Alcantara finish on the doors. I also love the aluminum climate and audio controls, and it would be great to see Lexus implement them across the rest of its models. When it comes to convenience and tech you get heated and cooled seats as standard, along with neck warmers for chilly evenings with the top down. A heated steering is available as part of the All-Weather Package.

A 12-speaker sound system is standard, but buyers can upgrade to the 13-speaker Mark Levinson sound system as either part of the Touring Package, or as an individual option.

2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible Performance

View of the engine of a 2021 Lexus LC 500

The 2021 Lexus LC is powered by the same 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine from the LC Coupe, which makes 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. A ten-speed automatic handles shifting duties. The sprint from zero to 60 mph comes in 4.7 seconds, which is a few ticks slower than the 4.4 seconds of the LC Coupe. But from behind the wheel, those 3/10ths will be far less noticeable than the wind in your hair.

If you’re looking for blistering acceleration and extremely sharp handling, the LC might not be your best bet, as this car wasn’t designed to be a track monster. The driving characteristics are more similar to a grand tourer than an aggressive sports car, and that’s great. Not every sporty car needs to be a bare-knuckle affair. Nonetheless, there are some theatrics at play here. In Sport S+ mode, the sound of the exhaust is especially aggressive, so much so that it reminds me of a Mercedes-AMG.
