  5. 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Test Drive Review

Exterior view of the 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport

Just hours after the all-new 2022 Genesis GV70 was dropped off for me to review, I needed to make a quick run to the grocery store for a couple ingredients to make dinner. What should have taken just 10 minutes to run in and out turned into a 30-minute walkaround of the compact luxury SUV for the two people who were peeking into the windows when I came back outside, and the rest of my week with the GV70 went the same way almost everywhere I took it. As I always tell people about my job, such interactions are the most enjoyable part of my job, and this gorgeous, dark red GV70 drew more of a crowd than any other car I've driven this year… and that includes the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette!

The GV70 is the newest addition to the ever-growing Genesis lineup, which now includes three sedans and two SUVs, and it's by far the most expressive vehicle Hyundai's luxury brand has introduced since it was launched in 2015. With hopes of going up against sportier small premium SUVs like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, I was able to spend time with the 2022 Genesis GV70 optioned up with the twin-turbo V-6 and Sport packages.

Genesis has fine-tuned its cutting-edge style allowing the 2022 Genesis GV70 to easily be one of the best-looking SUVs in this compact segment. The overall shape is low, wide and athletic, and it incorporates Genesis' signature crest grille and split headlight/taillight treatment. While many people were drawn to the GV70's style, I was blown away by the high build quality such as the lights and integrated exhaust outlets sitting perfectly flush with the body and the consistent body gaps that are just as good as high-end luxury vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz. Adding to its curb appeal, this tester was equipped with the Sport Prestige Package that adds 21-inch wheels with a unique, dimpled five-spoke design. To complement all of the dark exterior trim (black chrome beltline trim), this tester was finished in a premium color called Mauna Red for an extra $500.

2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Interior

Open the doors, and the 2022 Genesis GV70 instantly shows that it's truly a world-class luxury SUV with amazing materials including bold colors, a design that is as eye-catching as the exterior and state-of-the-art cabin technology; no shortcuts were taken with this interior! Rather than neutral-colored interiors - like black, beige or gray - found inside other luxury SUVs, this tester showed off a beautiful Ultramarine (blue) interior with red stitching with red seat belts. From the instrument panel to the cargo area, the entire interior is lined with rich materials, and the cabin design is easily Genesis' best to date with a modern look and intuitive layout.

The rotary gear selector and ultra-wide 14.5-inch infotainment screen (with augmented-reality navigation) are stylish and extremely easy to use, and the overall design is tied together by oval-shaped motifs on the instrument panel, sides of the center console and door panel armrests. My favorite design element of the interior, though, is the three-spoke steering wheel that comes on GV70 Sport models, which features a stitched leather-wrapped airbag cover with a pentagonal shape that is similar to the crest grille found at the front of the GV70. This tester was equipped with two Sport packages: the $5,000 Sport Advanced Package and the $4,900 Sport Prestige Package. The Advanced Package brought equipment such as nappa leather seats with quilted stitching, leather trim on the instrument panel and door panels, suede headliner, heated steering wheel and a 16-speaker sound system, while the Prestige Package added carbon fiber trim, manual rear sunshades, three-zone climate control, heated outboard rear seats, head-up display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that features incredible three-dimensional graphics.

And since comfort is key in any luxury vehicle, the GV70 proves itself in that regard as well with an interior that is sporty yet comfortable and roomy. Despite being a compact vehicle with a coupe-like roofline, the GV70 easily fits five adults with plenty of headroom and legroom, and the cabin is very inviting with ambient lighting and a panoramic roof. The front seat is definitely the place to be, though, with heated and cooled front seats that include a 16-way power driver's seat with massaging (aka Ergo Motion) functions and a 12-way power passenger seat. When it comes to cargo, there's plenty of room here, too, with 28.9 cubic feet of space available behind the rear seat and 56.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat.

2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Powertrain

Exterior view of the 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport

In its base form, the 2022 Genesis GV70 is powered by a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but for added performance, buyers can also get a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 rated at 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, which is more powerful than the performance-tuned Audi SQ5 I recently drove. Regardless of which engine you choose, both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. In this configuration, the GV70 3.5T has EPA-rated fuel economy estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

As stylish and comfortable as the GV70 is, it's the performance and chassis tuning that really lets this SUV go head-to-head with its European rivals. The twin-turbo power delivers instant power and impressive acceleration, and while there aren't many curvy roads here in Florida's panhandle, the GV70's feels responsive and engaging in cornering maneuvers. Being a rear-drive based platform (shared with the Genesis G70 sedan), the GV70's standard all-wheel drive system can send up to 100 percent of the engine's power to the rear axles, and the aforementioned Sport Prestige Package also includes an electronic limited slip differential for improved handling capabilities.

2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Safety

The 2022 Genesis GV70 has yet to be rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but as expected from the luxury segment, this SUV comes loaded with the latest in safety technology. This list includes smart cruise control, forward collision avoidance, lane keeping assist, blind spot collision avoidance, rear cross traffic alert and Hyundai's innovative Safe Exit Assist and radar-based Advanced Rear Occupant Alert. On top of that, the optional Sport Advanced Package adds Hyundai's Remote Smart Parking Assist, Surround View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, Park Distance Warning Sensors in the front and Parking Collision Avoidance in the rear.

2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Overall

Exterior view of the 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport

In the six short years since the brand was introduced, Genesis has established itself a serious player in the luxury vehicle world, and as the newest addition to the lineup, the 2022 Genesis GV70 becomes the one to beat in the ever-important compact luxury SUV segment. Not only was the GV70 fun to drive, it was fun to show off to people almost everywhere I parked it. I was disappointed when my test vehicle got picked up, and that doesn't happen very often.

Unlike parent company Hyundai, Genesis isn't positioning itself as a value-oriented brand, but as it turns out, the GV70 is still able to undercut comparably equipped rivals from BMW, Audi and Mercedes. In base form, a GV70 2.5T will set you back $41,000, but adding the twin-turbo V-6 and the duo of Sport packages, the 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T sampled for this review carried an as-tested price of $64,045.
