There's a reason why the Ford F-Series has the best-selling truck for more than 40 years, and it comes down to the sheer variety of choices this truck offers its buyers. From basic work rigs to loaded-up luxury trucks, Ford makes a version of its full-size truck for every taste, and the newest addition to the lineup is a heavy-duty complement to the performance-oriented F-150 Raptor. So meet the all-new 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor. Going toe to toe with the Ram 2500 Power Wagon, the Super Duty's new Tremor Off-Road Package is available on F-250 or F-350 (SRW) models for $3,975, and it brings a Raptor-like presence to the heavy-duty truck market.

Although nowhere near as extreme as the F-150 Raptor, the 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor features a distinctively rugged appearance to set it apart from other F-250 models. Aside from the obvious "Tremor" decals, the easiest way to spot this off-road Super Duty is the exclusive 18-inch matte-black aluminum wheels wrapped in meaty 35-inch all-terrain tires, which Ford says are the largest tires fitted to a heavy-duty pickup truck from the factory. The Tremor package also includes Raptor-style steel running boards that tuck closer to the body for added breakover clearance, a two-inch lift on the front end, and a shorter air dam for better approach angles. In the end, the 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor offers 31.65 degrees of approach angle and 24.51 degrees of departure angle which, according to Ford, mark the best for any factory Super Duty.

The Tremor package can only be added to the F-250 and F-350 models with a crew cab and short bed configuration, but there are plenty of available options outside of those parameters. One of the coolest options available on the Tremor (although not added to this tester) is a 12,000-pound Warn winch from the factory for an extra $3,000. This truck did get quad-beam LED headlights for $1,180 and a variety of cargo bed options including a spray-in bedliner, fifth-wheel hitch prep kit, and stowable/lockable loading ramps adding up to $1,790. LED bed lights and Ford's tailgate step were included as part of the $3,495 Lariat Ultimate Package. Finally, this tester was painted in a premium color called Star White for an extra $595, and this pearlescent hue was a perfect complement to the black wheels.

While the 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor is a tough and rugged truck on the outside, this tester had a plush cabin. Ford offers the Tremor Off-Road Package on the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trim levels, and the truck you see here is a decked-out example of the Lariat trim.

The aforementioned Lariat Ultimate Package includes navigation, remote start as well as ten-way power front seats that are both heated and ventilated. The leather seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel provide for a luxurious cabin, while the two rows of bench seats (with lots of hidden storage) and all-weather floor mats ($135) mean that this truck is still ready to get plenty of work done. Being the Crew Cab model, the F-250 Tremor has no problem accommodating six adults!

2020 Ford F-250 Tremor Performance

View of the engine block of the 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor

The 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor can be equipped with the 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel V-8, but this truck comes standard with Ford's all-new 7.3-liter "Godzilla" gasoline V-8. This engine produces 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, and it pairs to Ford's ten-speed automatic transmission. As a heavy-duty truck, the Super Duty doesn't get official EPA-rated fuel economy estimates, but this new V-8 returned around 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, according to the trip computer.

Ford's new gas V-8 is a strong engine for this big truck as it provides surprising off-the-line acceleration as well as low-end torque, which are beneficial for both off-roading and towing. While Ford doesn't list tow ratings specific to the Tremor, the press release says that this truck's towing capability is similar to a standard model - for the record, that's 15,000 pounds with a conventional trailer and 18,600 pounds with a fifth-wheel trailer when equipped with this tester's 4.3:1 rear axle gear ratio.

Combine the Dana limited-slip front differential with an electronic shift-on-the-fly locking rear differential, and the Tremor makes easy work of slick traction conditions. Further improving this truck's off-road capabilities, the Tremor has 10.8 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford through 33 inches of water, and it also comes with Trail Control - introduced on the F-150 Raptor -  acting as an off-road cruise control system. When I took this behemoth off road, it made easy work of deep ruts, challenging articulation, and washboard dirt roads.

As fun as the 2020 Ford F-250 Tremor is to drive on the trials, this truck is still a perfectly comfortable daily driving truck. Around town or on the interstate, this off-road-ready Super Duty has a smooth, quiet ride with minimal road noise from the meaty 35-inch tires, and despite dwarfing just about everything else on the road, the F-250 was easy to drive around town. One key factor in the truck's handling is the Adaptive Steering system, which is a $1,000 option that automatically adjusts the steering ratio in response to vehicle speed. It adapts automatically to the driving situation where at lower speeds (like backing up a trailer or parking), the steering ratio increases requiring fewer turns of the steering wheel (and less steering effort), while at driving speeds, the steering ratio decreases for a steering feel that is firmer.
