If you're in the market for a three-row, mid-size crossover these days, there are an abundance of options out there for you.

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse is right in the middle of the mix when it comes to this family-friendly segment, and one way it stands out from the multitude of competitors (such as the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Volkswagen Atlas, to name a few) is to pamper its occupants with Cadillac-like luxury thanks to the top-of-the-line High Country.

So to see how high-end a Chevy crossover can get, we spent a week in the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse AWD High Country, which checks every possible option box.

The second-generation Traverse was introduced for the 2018 model year giving this mid-size crossover a healthy dose of Camaro-inspired style, and not much has changed for the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. In fact, the only change for 2020 is the addition of the all-new Black Cherry Metallic, which this tester boasted.

This color was a perfect complement to the Traverse High Country's premium style that includes 20-inch wheels, a tasteful amount of chrome and, of course, the High Country badging on the liftgate. Overall, the Traverse has surprisingly compact proportions for a mid-size CUV that leave it looking stylish and well balanced.

The bright chrome and big, flashy wheels hint at the High Country's luxurious intentions, and the interior comes through in spades with added comfort, high-tech features and attractive two-tone materials. Opting for this top trim brings an interior that is loaded with upscale amenities such as perforated leather seats with heated and ventilated front seats, wireless charging for devices, power tilt and telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control and hands-free power rear liftgate. Heated second row captain's chairs and the Dual Skyscape two-panel power sunroof finish off the High Country's impressive cabin.

Proving how ready this crossover is for a family adventure, the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse comes with six USB ports (two in each row), 10 cup holders and plenty of space regardless of where you're sitting. Despite being smaller than the original Traverse, the cabin definitely feels roomier and more accommodating. The third row, for example, is easy to access thanks to the smart slide second row seat - no more squeezing or contorting to make it to the rear-most seats - and there's enough headroom and legroom for adults to fit comfortably back there.

When cargo capability becomes more important than passenger space, the Traverse can pack 58.1 cubic feet of cargo behind the second-row seats and the cavernous space with both rear rows folded flat accommodates 98.2 cubic feet - almost 4 cubic feet more than a full-size Chevrolet Tahoe.  When you pack the Traverse full of passengers or cargo, GM's innovative rear camera mirror comes in especially handy offering a clear view behind the vehicle with no obstructions.

2020 Chevrolet Traverse High Country Powertrain

All 2020 Chevrolet Traverse trim levels are powered by the same 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and this powertrain combination delivers 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque while returning EPA-rated fuel economy estimates of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway* on this all-wheel drive tester.

Crossovers have become popular as much for their interior space as for their ride quality, and the 2020 Traverse is definitely one of the smoothest riding CUVs in this three-row segment. The chassis and suspension are setup for your typical family road trip, but even if you venture off the beaten path, the Traverse's suspension setup has no problem returning a smooth, drama-free ride. The most surprising part about driving the Traverse is how maneuverable it is in tight spaces. The steering gives an urban-friendly turning radius, which also proves beneficial in parallel parking.

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse carries a five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and new technology makes this crossover even safer. All 2020 Traverse trim levels now come standard with HD rear vision camera, while the HD surround vision and rear camera mirror are standard on RS, Premier and High Country trim levels.

The High Country trim also adds forward collision alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, low speed forward automatic braking, front pedestrian braking and automatic high beam headlights. New for 2020, Chevrolet's Buckle to Drive is an industry-first feature that partners with the Teen Driver mode to prevent the vehicle to shift from park for 20 seconds if the driver's seat belt is buckled.

Today's mid-size three-row crossover market is a packed segment with customers that are equally diverse looking to either downsize from a full-size SUV or upgrade to a roomier family vehicle. The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse is a right-sized crossover that offers a little of everything from an affordable base model to the fully loaded luxury model.

This family-sized crossover delivers big on comfort and safety, and it also offers plenty of value with a starting price of $30,995**. This fully loaded 2020 Chevrolet Traverse AWD High Country adds plenty of extra content to go along with its as-tested price of $53,200. Bottom line, if you want more content than this Traverse offers, you're going to have to step up to a full-fledged luxury automaker like Cadillac.
