For 2021, Chevrolet is giving faithful buyers of the popular Tahoe SUV more. The fifth-generation Tahoe has nearly five more inches of wheelbase than its predecessor and measures almost seven inches longer overall. Those larger exterior dimensions equate to massive increases in passenger and cargo space.

The addition of the upscale High Country model increases the amount of trim options to six. Chevy offers the new Tahoe with a greater amount of engine choices, including the 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six. All of them are paired with a new ten-speed automatic. In addition to the standard new multilink independent rear suspension, an Air Ride Adaptive Suspension is available to make the 2021 Tahoe the smoothest-riding one yet.

One thing Chevy hasn't increased on the Tahoe is its base price. Like the outgoing model, the 2021 Tahoe has a base price of $49,000. The well- equipped Premier 4X4 press loaner that I drove for a week had an as-tested price of $71,380.

Chevrolet not only went big with the 2021 Tahoe, it went bold, particularly with the front end. On the Premier model, the slim, wide-set headlights are connected by a grille filled with two prominent chrome bars and several more rows of brightwork. Signature light bars frame the blunt tips of the front fenders and finish at the large vertical openings at the outboard ends of the front fascia.

There's a similar visual drama to the Tahoe's profile. A shark fin of bodywork juts up behind the rear doors. Black B- and D-pillars reduce the optical bulk while chrome roof rails, greenhouse trim, mirror caps, and running board accents add flashes of brightness even when the 20-inch polished aluminum wheels aren't spinning.

Even more metallic trim spans almost the entire width of the power liftgate. Surprisingly, instead of going with dual exhaust outlets, Chevy opted for a super sporty quad-tip setup. Chevy took a major risk with a vehicle that, according to the automaker, makes up more than a quarter of full-size SUV sales, but I think it paid off. The Tahoe stands out, even down in Texas, where big utilities are the unofficial state vehicle.

The new Tahoe's interior dimensions are definitely worth mentioning, but they weren't the first thing I noticed once I got behind the wheel. What stood out to me was the quality of the materials and the willingness to try something different. My test vehicle had some of the best wood-tone accents I've seen in a GM SUV.

Every strip of metallic trim seemed to be in the perfect place. The assorted buttons, dials and switches were right where I needed them to be and gave me easy access to functions I wouldn't want to search through a touchscreen menu to use. One particular cluster of buttons and paddles controlled the Tahoe's transmission. It took a little getting used to at first, but after that, shifting the Tahoe into gear was just another reflex.

Modern full-size SUVs are so large that they can be difficult to park cleanly on the first attempt. Fortunately, the right modern technologies take almost all of the guesswork and the phrase "Let me try that one more time" out of trips to the mall. My test vehicle's Premium Package added a variety of features, including the innovative Rear Camera Mirror, which gave me a completely unobstructed view of what was behind me. The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium infotainment system's 10.2-inch touchscreen showed me the feeds from the HD Surround Vision setups's multiple exterior cameras.

Chevy used the new Tahoe's longer wheelbase and overall length to create a much more spacious cabin. Legroom in the sliding second row is up by three inches. The third row has a whopping 10 extra inches of legroom. With the second and third rows adjusted to my 5'10" height, I had plenty of headroom and legroom in both of them. Cargo space behind the last row of seats has shot up by 66 percent to a total of 25.5 cubic feet. All of those changes result in a 30 percent hike in maximum cargo space, which goes from a 2020 high of 94.7 to 122.9 cubic feet.

Chevy offers the Tahoe Premier with either the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel or 5.3-liter V8 and a ten-speed automatic transmission. My Tahoe loaner had the V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management and four-wheel drive connected to a two-speed transfer case with 2HI, 4HI, 4LO and Auto modes. Aside from several other features, the Premium Package equipped the Tahoe with the Max Trailering Package. That and the V8's 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque enabled the Tahoe to tow up to 8,200 lbs.

The EPA calculated that a Tahoe with the 5.3-liter V8 and four-wheel drive is capable of getting 16 city, 20 highway and 18 combined mpg. My 208 miles in the Tahoe Premier yielded only 14.8 mpg.
