  7. 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST

As someone with an abnormally large head, I've learned that "One Size Fits All" is not a concrete truth. Several times, I've tried on a hat hoping for things to work out and inevitably wound up disappointed because it either didn't come down far enough over my giant melon or didn't have enough circumference to go on in the first place. I don't even trust blended sizes, such as L/XL. These days, if a hat isn't available in XXL, I don't even consider it further.

That's essentially how it is with trucks, too. One particular version doesn't fit every lifestyle and occupation. That's why automakers offer their pickups in a multitude of trim levels and with so many engine options. Take Chevrolet, for example. It makes eight distinctly different versions of its half-ton Silverado. The $28,500 Work Truck is a no-frills model that's ready to help you get the job done. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there's the $53,300 High Country. The one I tested earlier this year was a handsome rig with impressive tech and a comprehensive array of safety features. In between, there are models such as the $39,700 Custom Trail Boss, which comes with a two-inch lift and other off-road components, and the $39,100 RST, an LT-based variation with a largely monochromatic color scheme and LED lighting at both ends and even in the bed.

The two-wheel-drive RST media loaner ($51,890 as tested) Chevy sent out to me for evaluation was perfect for a mix of leisure driving, running errands and getting some light work done.

As far as its exterior appearance goes, the RST is the sport model in the Silverado lineup. Instead of bright and shiny chrome, its two primary grille bars and front and rear bumpers are covered in the same paint as its body. In my case, that was Northsky Blue Metallic. A set of optional two-tone 20-inch wheels gripped by 275/60 Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires elevated my test truck's style (and capabilities) even more. Thanks to the Bed Protection Package's spray-in bedliner, the nearly six-foot-long bed was protected from the cargo it was designed to carry. While my father was out of town, he called to ask me if I could vacuum one of his rental properties so his real estate agent could show it to a couple of potential tenants. It was the perfect opportunity to put the RST to work. After bringing out a Shop Vac and extension cord, I lowered the RST's lightweight tailgate, slid the vacuum and cord into the bed, then used one of the rear bumper's helpful CornerSteps to climb into the cargo box so I could push my tools against the far horizontal wall of the bed. I had a dozen tie-down points to choose from, but I only needed two to bungee-cord the vacuum into place.

Some of those features came in handy again when I needed to haul two large pieces of artwork, the largest of which measured 40" X 50". I knew the bed would be more than long enough to fit it, but I wasn't sure about the space between the RST's wheel wheels. Luckily, there was just enough to get the job done: 50.63 inches.

Even though I used the RST to get a little work done, it sure didn't feel like a jobsite special on the inside. Chevy upgraded the interior front to back. One package added heated front bucket seats, including a driver's seat with 10-way adjustability, as well as a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. Another covered the front seats in leather and equipped the rear 60/40-split folding rear bench with an under-seat storage compartment.

Those made my press truck more comfortable; a third optional bundle made it more convenient by contributing features such as 120-volt outlets in the center instrument stack and cargo box, high-res rear camera, Bose audio system with seven speakers and a subwoofer, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with an eight-inch HD touchscreen.

I may have a giant head, but at 5'10", I'm probably average height. I had no problem fitting comfortably in the spacious second row. Flipping up the seat bottoms and accessing the storage area underneath them was just as effortless.

When Chevy configured my test truck, it went past the available 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine and DuraMax turbo diesel 3.0-liter I6 and ticked the box for the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. An eight-speed automatic and 3.23:1 rear axle ratio dispatches its 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque to the road. According to the EPA, that powertrain in a two-wheel-drive Silverado Crew Cab should return fuel economy figures of 17 city, 23 highway and 19 combined mpg. According to the onboard computer, I only managed to average 14.9 mpg after covering 229.2 miles.

The RST is available with two towing packages. The basic one that my truck had comes with a hitch guidance line on the rear camera feed, hitch receiver and seven- and four-pin connectors. If my dad had needed more heavy-duty help, I would've been able to haul 2,060 pounds and tow 9,800 pounds. The available Max Trailering Package boosts those figures to 2,180 and 11,500, respectively.

In terms of options, my RST tester was a well-rounded truck. It had cool wheels, leather seats, upgraded tech and a few key additional safety features. Chevy puts three in Safety Package I that provide 360 degrees of protection. Its parking sensors monitor the front and back. Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert covers the sides. Rear Cross Traffic Alert adds another pair of electronic eyes to watch the Silverado's back.

Whether it's hats or pickups, one size doesn't always fit all. Trust me. If a light-duty truck with sporty good looks, a variety of available options, and the ability to tow nearly 12,000 pounds sounds like the right fit for you, you can take the 2020 Silverado RST for a test drive at an AutoNation Chevrolet dealership.
