Audi is starting to spice up its sports car lineup in the United States with the addition of some exciting new models, including the R8 supercar and the long-awaited RS6 Avant.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the Audi A4 lineup, we don't get an RS4 in the United States. What we do get is the Audi S4, which is an excellent car that's balanced between a comfortable daily driver and a sports car. Driving it spiritedly is sure to put a smile on your face.

Compared to its rivals, the Audi S4 isn't as aggressive as the BMW M340i, but it can definitely go toe-to-toe with the Mercedes-AMG C43 and the Cadillac CT5-V. That said, let's take a closer look at the 2020 Audi S4.

Usually, when a German luxury brand makes any upgrades to a vehicle in their lineup, it's a pretty big story. However, there wasn't much buzz when it came to the updated Audi A4/S4 lineup. That may be because Audi didn't make any significant updates for the 2020 model year besides subtle changes to the body, headlamps, and the taillights. The overall stance and silhouette remain close to the outgoing model.

Now, that's not entirely a bad thing because the Audi A4/S4 lineup is pretty attractive. In my opinion, the Audi S4, the more aggressive of the two, is a sleeper. You don't expect this thing to carry 349 horsepower under the hood.

Nonetheless, I would love to see some significant upgrades made to the exterior design. Audi has been pumping out some very attractive looking vehicles as of late, and I would love to see them give that same attention to one of their best-selling models.

2020 Audi S4 Interior

Interior view of the 2020 Audi S4

When you take a seat inside the 2020 Audi S4, you're welcome by a very stylish and high-quality built interior. Audi is known for offering some of the best interiors in the luxury segment, and even though the A4/S4 didn't receive many changes for the 2020 model year, the cabin remains impressive.

If you're not a die-hard Audi-fan, then this interior will blow you away. However, suppose you're a true Audi enthusiast, you'll notice that the only significant changes made to the Audi A4/S4 for the 2020 model year are the addition of a 10.1-inch touchscreen dismal that houses the new MMI infotainment system, along with some minor rearranging of the center console.

The A4/S4 doesn't get the dual-screen infotainment system treatment we've seen on models like the A6, A7, A8, Q7, or Q8. Instead, it makes do with just one display. You do have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and the overall learning curve for the infotainment is pretty short. Once you hop into it, you'll easily be able to navigate around the features and settings.

Comfort-wise, the 2020 Audi S4 is a fantastic place to be. The seats are supremely comfortable and definitely compliment the smooth ride quality. Rear legroom comes in at 35.7-inches, which is on the shorter side of the segment, but fine for trips around town.

2020 Audi S4 Powertrain

Power for the 2020 Audi S4 still comes from a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine making 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That means the S4 will run from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Now, that's a couple of ticks slower than competitors like the BMW M340i and Mercedes-AMG C43. But the Audi S4 does outshine the competition when it comes to offering drivers a comfortable ride quality. Even for a German luxury sedan, the way the S4 handles bumps and imperfections on the road is very impressive. That said, if the mode strikes, you can always select Dynamic Mode, and the steering will tighten, the suspension will stiffen, and the transmission will hold gears longer. Handling-wise, the Audi S4 doesn't disappoint, and you can hurl it into corners with confidence.

Fuel economy wise, the 2020 Audi S4 gets an EPA-rated 20/29 mpg* (city/highway).

2020 Audi S4 Overall

Yes, the 2020 Audi S4 may not be the most aggressive in this segment, but that's okay. Not everyone is in the market for a hardcore sports car, and actually, the number of people who want to go hard and go fast all the time is pretty small.

Most buyers in this segment are looking for a comfortable daily driver that will give them some extra power if they're in a position to play, and surefooted performance in challenging conditions. And for those buyers? This Audi will sparkle. Prices for the 2020 Audi S4 start at $49,900. Visit your local AutoNation Audi dealership for a test drive today.
