  7. 2020 MINI Countryman JCW ALL4 Review

In a world where everyone is buying SUVs and crossovers, even MINI can't remain fully MINI. To grab a piece of the pie, the company hopped into the SUV and crossover battle with the Countryman. The 2020 Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 is the largest car to be offered from MINI, and with 300 ponies on tap, it also has the most power.

The exterior design of the MINI Countryman remains true to the overall MINI design language, which is a great thing. In my opinion, the designers did a fantastic job of making the Countryman look and feel more like a hatchback than the compact crossover/SUV it's meant to be.

Size-wise, the MINI Countryman is similar to the likes of the Fiat 500L/Fiat 500X and the BMW X1/X2. However, I think the MINI Countryman stands out in terms of design amongst all of its competitors, as it's edgy and pretty cute. My test model had some model exclusive, aggressive touches like the two-tone color scheme with a red roof, red side view mirrors, and red trim around the grille.

While I'm not a fan of the design of the headlamps, I'll admit they look pretty cool with the indicators on, when the hidden MINI logo becomes visible. The taillights look cool too, but I'd love to see the Union Jack taillights that the Countryman gets in Europe available on models here.

Once you hop inside the 2020 MINI Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4, you'll be welcomed by exactly the kind of stylish and unique interior MINI is known for, and materials are high-quality materials all around. Being a division of BMW, it's not surprising that the Countryman JCW has a quality built cabin.

Personally, I love MINI's toggle switches. It's definitely a unique touch, using them makes it seem like you're getting ready to fly a jet. Now, when it comes to the JCW SPORTS seats, I personally didn't find them particularly comfortable, and was a little  shocked that while heated seats are standard, power seats aren't.

In regards to tech, the John Cooper Works ALL4 has a pretty simple analog gauge cluster, and buyers can add a heads-up display as an option. This comes with a foldable glass screen. The infotainment is housed in an 8.8-inch display, and you can control it by touching it or using the iDrive style dial in the center console. If you're familiar with BMW's buttons and knobs, you'll feel right at home.

2020 MINI Countryman JCW ALL4 Performance

Even though the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 is a pretty large MINI, it admirably retains the go-kart-like driving dynamics fans of the marque have come to love.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine which makes 301 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The only available transmission is an eight-speed automatic, which will be a letdown from some fans, but a zero-to-60 time of just 4.9 seconds should soothe some three-pedal fans. Despite its size, the car didn't  feel bulky, and turbo lag wasn't an issue either.

Handling wise, the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 does not disappoint at all. Throw it in Sport Mode, and the steering wheel will get tighter, which provides more feedback when you're throwing it into corners. In regards to fuel economy, the Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 gets an EPA-rated 23/30 mpg  (city/highway).

Overall, I was still very pleased that the Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 didn't feel bulky and laggy.

2020 MINI Countryman JCW ALL4 Overall

Yes, the MINI Countryman John Cooper Works ALL4 is a pretty large vehicle for MINI, but to stay competitive and relevant, the company can't ignore one of the automotive markets hottest segments. And in my opinion? It did a great job of doing so while staying true to its roots.

Pricing for the 2020 MINI Countryman John Cooper Works ALL 4 starts at $41,400, and while that price tag may be hard for some to swallow, it might be helpful to keep in mind that this machine is basically a BMW X2 M35i, which costs around $4,000 more.So from that perspective, this MINI is a bargain.
