The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is Here!

On Wednesday, Honda officially took the wraps off the all-new Civic Type R. The media was assembled at an airport hangar in Hawthorne, California, just around the corner from SpaceX, and there was lots of excitement in the air.

As enthusiasts know, this is only the second generation of Honda's legendary hot hatch that's come to our shores, and while the full specs haven't been released, it looks to be the best one yet.

To set the stage, Honda had models from all 11 generations of the Civic on hand, including the 1999 Si I retro-reviewed back in 2020. Walking among the models, and getting to see just how much the venerable Civic has changed since its introduction 50 years ago was a real treat. Plus, checking out the previous generation Type R made me remember just how much fun I had flogging it when it was in the Seattle press fleet. That said, let's get to what we know about the latest Honda Civic Type R.

After Mike Kistemaker, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Sales arrived in a HondaJet, he was joined on stage by Indycar Series driver Colton Herta, and we learned a few things. First, the new Type R will be the most powerful in the model's history, which means the turbocharged 2.0-liter will make more than 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of twist.

Now, how much more is anyone's guess. But since the Type R will still exclusively be front-wheel drive, we're not looking at some exponential bump, as putting down too much more poke through the front wheels isn't feasible. So I'm thinking we'll see a modest boost here, meaning ten or so additional ponies. And I think that's fine, as the last gen was far from underpowered.

Because Honda loves enthusiasts and wants us to be happy, a six-speed manual transmission will be on the menu. The trick rev-matching technology will also be back, so at the push of a button, even fat-footed folks will be able to nail every downshift like a factory hot shoe.

The vehicle's dimensions have also changed for the better. Not only will the latest Type R be lower than its predecessor, it'll also be wider and longer. Plus, a slight drop in wheel size, from 20 inches to 19 inches, means there will be a little more sidewall to cushion the ride, and an increase in the width of the rubber means more grip.

At this point, there's no info on the weight of the Type R, but the chassis will be stiffer, and the steering and suspension have been tweaked too. These changes are part of the reason that the latest version just claimed the front-wheel drive lap record at Japan's Suzuka Circuit.

The interior will be a Type R-style version of the current Civic's cabin, complete with the trick honeycomb treatment on the dash. I last saw this in the Civic Sport Touring I tested a couple months back, and it looks even better in person than it does in pictures.

Once in the cockpit, pilots will also be able to select a new +R driving mode, which will configure the gauge cluster to highlight only the most important metrics, like rpm and gear position. The Honda LogR data logger will also be able to time laps and, in what's sure to provide for some great YouTube moments, record video.

For 2023, buyers will get five color choices: Historic Championship White, Rallye Red, Boost Blue, Crystal Black Pearl and Sonic Grey Pearl. At the reveal, I only got to see Type R in Historic Championship White and Rallye Red, but I'm sure it'll look particularly wicked in Honda's Sonic Grey Pearl.

Actually, it'll look wicked in any color, as I think this is the hottest version of the Type R yet. The overstyled boy racer cues of the last model have been replaced with a much cleaner, meaner look, and the flared front fenders and wider rubber give it a fantastic presence. There isn't a fake vent anywhere, and the huge honeycomb grille reminds me of aftermarket mods I've seen on previous gen Civics. Safe to say, the stylists here nailed it.

There was no word on pricing just yet, but you can expect the new generation of the Honda Civic Type R to arrive at your local AutoNation Honda dealer this fall. And stay tuned for a full review of this red-hot pocket rocket after it hits the press fleets. Check out more photos from the event below!
