Tow-behind travel trailers provide the most versatility for recreational vehicles, and standing at the top of the list are fifth-wheel campers.

Opting for a fifth-wheel travel trailer provides all of the size and luxuries of a motorhome, while still offering the practicality that comes with truck ownership, and of course, you don't have to worry about flat-towing a car on camping adventures.

For this purpose, three-quarter and one-ton pickups are ideal, so with that in mind, here are the top five trucks for towing a fifth-wheel camper trailer.

When it comes to hauling a fifth-wheel trailer, the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty is the king of the hill. Updated for 2020, this version of the best-selling Ford F-Series is essentially a medium-duty chassis with a pickup truck cab and cargo bed, and when it's configured with the regular cab, dual rear wheels and two-wheel drive, this monster hauler has a maximum towing capacity of 37,000 pounds!

This class-leading fifth-wheel towing capacity comes courtesy of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel V-8 that is rated at 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque and is backed with an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford's optional Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature also makes it easier than ever to haul a trailer with the 2020 Ford F-450 Super Duty.

If the top-dog F-450 Super Duty is too much truck for you, there's always the 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty. In the same configuration with the same engine, this version of the Super Duty tops all other one-ton pickups with a 35,750-pound towing capacity.

The F-350 might not have the monstrous towing capacity of the F-450, but it does offer more options including single rear wheels and a base gasoline engine. Accordingly, the F-350 is a more cost-effective option when compared to the F-450.

Proving that the towing war is a game of numbers, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD and 2020 GMC Sierra 3500 HD siblings are rated just under the F-350 with a maximum towing capacity of 35,500 pounds.

This tow rating comes when the Silverado 3500 HD is configured with a regular cab, two-wheel drive, dual rear wheels as well as the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel V-8 that produces 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. Both of these heavy-duty haulers also offer GM's Advanced Trailering System that uses up to 15 optional cameras including the transparent trailer view making it even easier to tow trailers.

The top three one-ton haulers are all within 650 pounds of each other, and the 2020 Ram 3500 rounds out this list with a maximum towing capacity of 35,100 pounds.

This towing capacity is possible when the Ram 3500 is configured with the regular cab, dual rear wheels, two-wheel drive as well as the available 6.7-liter Cumming High-Output turbo diesel inline-six. This option engine produces 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

If you don't need a truck that is as big, bulky or expensive as most diesel-powered heavy-duty trucks, the Nissan Titan XD is a promising option among three-quarter ton trucks.

Although the Titan XD no longer offers the powerful Cummins V-8, the 5.6-liter gasoline V-8 produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque to deliver a maximum tow rating of 11,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer.
