2023 Lexus RX Buyer's Guide

The Lexus RX is the original luxury crossover standard, and changed the automotive world forever. Now entering its fifth-generation, the debut of the all-new 2023 RX brings many firsts for both the model and the brand.

Built on a new global architecture platform, the RX is poised to offer enhanced performance and efficiency thanks to four all-new electrified powertrains, plus tons of new technologies.

Let's take a closer look at the most advanced RX ever produced by Lexus.

For the 2023 model changeover, the RX will be offered in six grades:

  • Standard
  • Premium
  • Premium+
  • Luxury
  • F SPORT Handling
  • F SPORT Performance

There are a lot of firsts for the 2023 RX, including the new Premium+ and F SPORT Performance grades, as well as a plug-in hybrid electric variant (PHEV) that will be available later this year.

The first-ever RX F SPORT Performance grade delivers a new style of driving dynamics thanks to a hybrid powertrain that produces 366 total horsepower and 406 lb-ft. of total torque. A dedicated electric motor sends near-instantaneous power to the rear wheels, offering exciting accelerations, all-wheel drive capabilities, and enhanced grip.

Overall, the new global architecture platform that the RX rides on is 198 pounds lighter with a lower center of gravity. Rigidity has also been improved with stronger metals and advanced adhesive materials as well as welding techniques. And with slightly larger wheelbase dimensions all around, the 2023 RX gains a better performance stance in addition to increased legroom for rear passengers.

The 2023 RX exudes a new style of Lexus design language, and the results are quite seductive thanks in part to a seamless grille that unifies the entire vehicle body as one.

Clean surfaces, aerodynamic curves, and a coupe-like roofline give cues to the RX's sporty-ness and agility, while still offering plenty of sophistication and flair. These elements are not only pretty to look at, but also functional. For example, the shape of the front end channels air to the brakes as well as around the entire body, passing over flush window and door moldings, a rear spoiler, and dimpled underbody covers. And almost as if imitating this airflow pattern, the single lens rear taillamp spans the entire width of the RX, emphasizing its low and wide stance.

You can really lean into the display of athleticism with the RX F SPORT Performance grade, which swaps the front and rear bumpers for an exclusive design, and adds a piano black grille as well as black accents and body-colored sills. And if these elements weren't distinguishing enough, the F SPORT Performance rolls on exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in custom Michelin Pilot Sport tires. These ultra-grippy tires feature a special compound and tread pattern created specifically for the 2023 RX.

There are 10 exterior color options available for the 2023 model year, depending on your RX grade selection, and can be paired with 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels to suit your tastes.

For the luxurious passenger area, the 2023 RX employs the tazuna concept, a design style derived from the Lexus Driving Signature philosophy which prioritizes functionality for the driver. Gauges, displays, buttons, etc are within easy reach and view, while other elements of the cabin space are laid out in an expansive, minimalist fashion.

Plenty of small item storage solutions are seamlessly provided throughout, including a front cubby that houses an available Qi-compatible wireless device charger. The center console box has also been redesigned, and can be opened from either side for enhanced ergonomics and convenience.

Of course, all seating is very comfortable and wrapped in premium materials, perfect for daily commutes or long road trips. The rear seats are available with a 40/20/40 split along with power folding, cooling, and heating functions. In addition, rear passengers have easy access to two USB Type-C outlets or an available AC power socket to keep a variety of devices charged.

Infotainment is delivered via a standard 9.8-inch or available 14-inch touchscreen display that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Lexus' Intelligent Assistant is also available for those with a Drive Connect subscription, and unlocks enhanced voice command features with the phrase "Hey Lexus." You can easily adjust select cabin amenities like navigation, music, or climate control without ever taking your hands off the steering wheel.

Depending on your RX grade selection, six interior color options with four trim styles are available for the 2023 model year. Additional interior highlights include an available head-up display, panorama glass roof, ambient lighting, and 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.

2023 Lexus RX Buyer's Guide

The 2023 RX offers four all-new electrified powertrains, including the RX-first plug-in hybrid variant.

All base RX models come standard  with a new turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 275 horsepower and a higher torque output of 317 lb.ft. This is achieved through several advanced technologies and weight-saving designs, ultimately resulting in smoother operation and better fuel efficiency.

For the hybrid powertrain, a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine is paired with an electric motor to deliver 246 total system horsepower and 233 lb.ft. of torque. And arriving later this year, the RX's first-ever plug-in hybrid system features an 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery and dedicated E-Four rear motor to provide quick accelerations and full-time all-wheel drive.

At the top of the spectrum, the F SPORT Performance grade features a high-performance hybrid configuration that produces 366 horsepower and 406 lb.ft. of torque through a DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system. But it's not just about power - the F SPORT Performance grade addresses overall sportiness with Adaptive Variable Suspension, upgraded brakes, and Dynamic Rear Steering.

All-wheel drive is an available upgrade for all 2023 RX models, and comes standard on F SPORT Handling, F SPORT Performance, and all hybrid powertrains.
