  5. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado: Everything You Need to Know

Exterior view of the Chevrolet Silverado
For the 2022 model year, Chevrolet is introducing a redesigned Silverado that continues to expand its feature offerings as well as its cool looks.

And even though the Silverado is one of the top three best-selling vehicles in America, Chevrolet isn't going to sit back on its heels. They're still blazing new trails with driver assistance and technology innovations, while upping the performance and luxury for an all-around enhanced ownership experience.

Let's take a deeper dive into the long list of major updates and new features of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Trims

Silverado's 2022 redesign significantly updates the following trim options with both interior and exterior enhancements:

  • LT
  • RST
  • LT Trail Boss
  • ZR2
  • LTZ
  • High Country

The fully redesigned interior consists of sweeping views and a spacious feel, while the exterior for each trim features a new front fascia. These elements give the Silverado (both inside and out) a wide visual presence that communicates its athleticism and power. And one of my favorite details is the new walk-up and walk-away animations of the daytime running lamps. It really brings the truck to life!

But the most noteworthy change is the addition of the ZR2 trim, a first-ever for the Silverado. With the ZR2, Silverado takes center stage as Chevrolet's top-of-the-line factory-lifted, extreme off-road vehicle.

Customers can get race-proven off-road performance straight from the showroom floor of your favorite AutoNation Chevrolet dealership. Silverado ZR2's comprehensive package includes impressive features like a standard 6.2-liter V8 engine with 420 horsepower, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, unique skid plates, and special off-road tuning for both the chassis and suspension.

For those who will be tackling really rough terrain or rock crawling, the ZR2's bumper features removable end caps so if they get scuffed on an adventure, you can easily swap them out. The dual exhaust has also been located ahead of the rear bumper to allow for better angle clearance and protection from damage.

You'll also find special styling elements on the new Silverado ZR2. There's a new black hood insert, unique grille with integrated lighting and "flow-tie" emblem, ZR2 badges, plus an exclusive Jet Black/Graystone leather-trimmed interior for a sleek midnight theme.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Exterior

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado is available in four body configurations, all of which can be equipped with either a 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrain:

  • Regular Cab, Long Bed (98.18 inches)
  • Double Cab, Standard Bed (79.44 inches)
  • Crew Cab, Short Bed (69.92 inches)
  • Crew Cab, Standard Bed (79.44 inches)

For exterior paint choices, you'll have access to up to 11 colors that were carried over from the 2021 model year, plus three new colors: Dark Ash, Sand Dune and Glacier Blue Metallic.

Silverado's overall design language embodies the same presence and strength that's shared across Chevrolet's sports car lineup. And it's been further refined for the new model year with elements that represent how many owners actually utilize their trucks as the main form of transportation for their family.

The front grille and visuals are all new, while the headlamps have been lowered to bring attention to Silverado's athletic stance. Of course, the foundation for what makes Silverado so popular remains -- the bed floor is still made of high-strength steel, there are 12 standard tie downs, and the tailgate is available with power up/down or as a six-position Multi-Flex tailgate.

You can also further personalize your Silverado with more than 15 available packages, from special edition visuals to snow plow prep to off-road protection and more.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Interior

On LT trim and above, the 2022 Silverado features a refreshed passenger area with new materials and technology that give off a luxurious look and feel.

The showcase piece of the cabin is a sleek 13.4 inch touchscreen display that is home to all of your infotainment and connectivity needs. Google Assistant is now built-in, allowing you to access certain vehicle functions by saying "Hey Google". You can speak normally to call or text friends, start your favorite music playlist, set reminders, or even adjust the cabin temperature. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also supported, along with Amazon Alexa.

Complementing this advanced system is a configurable instrument cluster for the driver. This 12.3 inch digital hub offers personalized access to the most important information about the truck's operation and the road ahead. You can take this intuitive and helpful technology to even higher levels with the available Rear Camera Mirror and Head-Up Display, making a total of four advanced screens for the ultimate driving experience.

New interior colors as well as seat designs are available for the 2022 model year, and the most striking additions can be found on the top-level High Country version: authentic open-pore wood trim, leather seating with exclusive perforation and stitching pattern, stainless steel speaker grilles, and a stunning Nightshift Blue color scheme.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Performance

Engine choices have been streamlined and optimized for the 2022 Silverado, and customers can choose from the following lineup:

  • 2.7L Turbo High-Output Engine
  • 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel
  • 5.3L V8 w/ Dynamic Fuel Management
  • 6.2L V8

The 2.7L Turbo High-Output Engine sees the most performance gain thanks to a new, more rigid cylinder block casting that's paired with a 30% stiffer crankshaft. Its fully forged bottom end plus technology derived from diesel engines helps this power plant deliver a GM-estimated 420 lb-ft of torque (a 20% increase over the current version) plus a maximum trailering rating of 9,500 pounds in a two-wheel drive configuration.

The popular 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel is also treated to upgrades, and now has a max tow rating of 13,300 pounds in two-wheel drive configuration.

Making sure all of this power is transferred to the road efficiently is a re-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission with smoother shifting and quicker downshifts, or Chevrolet's popular 10-speed automatic transmission.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Safety

For the 2022 model year, all Silverado trims come standard with Chevy Safety Assist, a collection of six active safety features that includes Forward Collision Assist, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam auto high beams. Also standard across all Silverados are an HD Rear Vision Camera and Buckle to Drive feature.

Silverado is also paving the way as an innovator in trailering safety, offering Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, the ability to use Adaptive Cruise Control while trailering, and a best-in-class Advanced Trailering System that's powered by up to eight cameras and an in-vehicle app.Interior view of the Chevrolet Silverado
In this vein of groundbreaking innovation, the 2022 Silverado is the first pickup from Chevrolet to offer Super Cruise, "the industry's first true hands-free driver-assistance technology for compatible roads." Super Cruise is available exclusively on the Silverado High Country and can be utilized on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada.

This advanced driver-assistance program has been designed with trailering in mind, and will adjust its behavior to compensate for additional drag and increased braking distance requirements. When you're not trailering, Super Cruise can also handle automatic lane changes to keep you on course.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado Overall
