New Look, Great Tech: 2019 Chevrolet Silverado RST Crew Cab Test Drive

With a more aggressive body design, enhanced technology, and a host of different engine choices, the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is attempting to garner a fat slice of the red-hot pickup truck segment. However, with stiff competition coming in the form of the 2019 Ram 1500  and Ford’s F-150, one has to wonder if this new 2019 Silverado RST Crew Cab has what it takes to reach the top. So we spent a week with this full-size rig to find out.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado RST Crew Cab Exterior

With Northsky Blue Metallic paint, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels wearing 275/60-series all-terrain tires, and completely revised body panels, the Silverado RST is one handsome looking half-ton truck. The RST (Rally Sport Truck) is one of eight trim levels available for the 2019 model year, and aside from the Trail Boss, is arguably the sexiest in the line-up. Consumers will immediately notice the almost complete lack of chrome on the RST. This not only conveys a more refined look, but with body-colored bumpers, center grille and door handles, it helps fool the eye into thinking it's smaller than its actual overall length of 231.7-inches would have you believe.Designing a pickup is no easy task, because let’s face it, they’re all pretty much the same shape. On the Silverado, the front end is a cohesive unit, with the hood, grille and fenders flowing seamlessly into one another. According to Chevrolet, the design is more aerodynamic, while being muscular at the same time. Head rearward, and folks will notice a hard tonneau cover, power opening rear glass and a bumper that not only houses dual chrome exhaust tips, but integrated bed steps as well. Already covered with durable bed liner, the cargo box boasts a best-in-class capacity (up to 20% more than competitors) with LED lights, available 120v outlet, 12 tie-down points, and a power tailgate that can be lowered via button in the cabin. The Z71 badges on the front fenders also meant we were treated to off-road suspension with Rancho shocks, beefier tires and skid plates to protect the undercarriage.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado RST Crew Cab Interior

While the exterior makes a bold statement, the interior goes back to basics with clean design and new features. Overall the cabin is a nice place to be. The dash is clearly laid out, and boasts a suite of large analog gauges. A thick-rimmed leather wrapped steering wheel with heat, provides access to the cruise control, radio, and hands-free phone, along with controls for the inset LCD information screen. Then there are the leather-trimmed seats that are not only comfortable, but also supportive. Rear seating in the 2019 Silverado is almost limousine-like, and with storage in the actual seat backs (a segment-first), stowing gear is never an issue. The rear seats also fold up, and offer cargo capacity that rivals some small crossovers.Storage aside, the Silverado RST offers up great technology by way of Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 System with its eight-inch color touchscreen display. Here, you’ll find things like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, vehicle and audio settings, navigation, rear camera, and even Chevrolet’s new In Vehicle Trailering System. The dual-zone HVAC system with its large dials and buttons, mean that both driver and passengers alike will find them intuitive and easy to use. Other items of note are the 4x4 controls to the left of the steering wheel, the multiple charging ports (USB, 110V and micro USB), and the trailer brake bias controller.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado RST Crew Cab Performance

GMs aluminum-block, 5.3L V8 with DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) lives under the hood, and runs on regular unleaded fuel. Output is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, with power being put to the ground via a smooth shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Rancho shocks and skid plates aside, our 4x4 RST with the Z71 Off-Road Package meant the inclusion of Hill Descent Control, an automatic locking rear differential, and Chevrolet’s Autotrac two-speed transfer case. There are also six-different drive modes available (Tour, Sport, Tow/Haul, Off-road, Terrain, Snow/Ice) that will help drivers conquer any conditions that may present themselves.

Performance was quite impressive, with the 5.3L V8 motivating our RST to 60 mph in just over 6.5 seconds. Acceleration was authoritative, with a great sound emanating from the dual-exhaust. EPA fuel economy numbers are rated at 22 mpg highway, 16 city and 18 mpg in combined driving. We actually experienced an above average figure of 19 mpg overall, which is pretty good considering this truck weighs in at over 5,400-pounds. Steering feel was better overall then on past models, and provided decent feedback to the driver. Hard braking and emergency handling maneuvers were conducted without drama and conveyed a feeling of confidence. A great backup camera helped to make parking lot maneuvers easy, and it must be said that outward visibility was much better than expected.

One of the best parts of the new Silverado has to be the new In Vehicle Trailering System. This system provides drivers with features like a Pre-Departure Checklist, a page that profiles different load sizes, a trailer light test function, service reminders, and there’s even a tire pressure monitoring system for the trailer tires. This is the type of information those that tow will love and Chevrolet did a great job of making it simple and easy to use.
