It’s difficult not to like something when it makes you feel like a hero every time you drive it. I’m not talking about a new sports car or an EV, but instead, a purpose-built pickup truck that can make even the smallest of stature feel as though they should wear an XXL. Ford’s built-to-be-beaten-on 2019 F-150 Raptor is that vehicle, and after driving it for over a week, both on, and off-road, I can tell you it’s one of the most satisfying trucks I’ve experienced to date.

When a manufacturer brings a truck to market that looks like the aftermarket built it, they’re doing it right. Released almost ten years ago, the original Raptor not only broke the mold but with it, Ford created an entirely new segment of truck. Here was a vehicle that was crafted to tackle the dirt first, and the pavement second, and in the years since its introduction, it’s only gotten better.Visually, not much has changed since a full body redesign took place back in 2017, as it’s still big, burly and looking to tackle the Baja 1000 if given the chance.Available in both SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations, and with a standard 5.5-foot bed, the aluminum-bodied 2019 Raptor is aggressive, regardless of how it’s set up. For 2019, there are eight different color options, as well as multiple graphics packages. Our SuperCrew tester was clad in Ford’s Performance Blue Paint, and sporting such options as the 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, FORD tailgate applique, a twin-panel moonroof, spray-in bedliner, and the power sliding rear window. In person, the truck is as impressive as they come, and it possesses a presence that few can match. Make no mistake though; this is a big truck with a 146-inch wheelbase, an overall width of 86.3 inches, and a height of 78.5 inches. When parked by itself, the Raptor may not seem that large, but try to fit it into a standard-size parking space, and things change very quickly.Making a full-size truck this off-road capable meant changes that went beyond just bolting on some new suspension. Those wide fenders, for instance, allow the Raptor to run oversized BFG All-Terrain T/A tires. Then there are the approach and departure angles of 30.2 inches and 23.1 inches, along with a total ground clearance of 11.5 inches.In truth, it's ungodly impressive. Other off-road inspired cues are the twin tow hooks located in the split front bumper, the cast aluminum running boards, a visible front skid plate, tow hooks in the rear, and the blacked-out exit ports for the exhaust.

With large buttons, overhead toggle switches, a carbon clad shift lever, and large analog-style gauges, the cabin of the Raptor has a proper ergonomic feel the enthusiast crowd should love. Niceties like optional Alcantara seat and console inserts, carbon fiber bits throughout the cabin, a 360-degree camera with a split-view display, and a rear in-cab cargo area that’s the size of a small pickup bed (for the SuperCrew), meant that the Raptor (when optioned like this tester) is a joy to live with on a daily basis.2019 also sees the availability of the 10-way power-adjustable Recaro seats with heat and ventilation, a 1,000-watt B&O stereo system, and Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system that gives one access to features such as Sirius Satellite Radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, Navigation, and vehicle settings. A paddle-shifter equipped leather-wrapped steering wheel with inset controls also allows access to the multi-configurable display in the gauge cluster. In regards to passenger comfort, the cabin is cavernous, with the rear-seating compartment offering limousine quantities of legroom, heated seating surfaces, as well as multiple USB ports, and a 110V inverter.Ford has also done a nice job of integrating a rotary knob for the 4x4 system, an adjustable trailer brake controller, and an upper control panel with ancillary toggle switches for those who want to run external accessories.

Whether romping down the beach, over rocks, through the desert or ripping down the interstate to get to your off-road destination, rest assured that the 2019 Ford Raptor will tackle just about anything you can throw at it. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that makes 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, the Raptor is capable of reaching 60 mph in just over five seconds. For 2019, there's also a revised Trail Control System, which Ford says is like cruise control for off-roading, and new FOX Live Valve Shocks that automatically adjust the suspension based on terrain, and more importantly, how aggressively one tackles it.A 10-speed automatic transmission helps to put the power down, while massive 315/70/17-series BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires ensure a constant state of grip. On the pavement, the Raptor is calm and compliant generating an EPA rated 18 mpg on the highway, 15 mpg in the city, and 16 mpg during combined driving.* The transmission performed well, but unfortunately, it seemed to be constantly hunting for the correct gear, which was frustrating. Off-road, however, is where this truck was meant to live, and it’s here that the Raptor shines. Washboard roads, whoops, deep sand, ruts, brush, rocks, whatever, have absolutely no effect on the Raptor. We traveled at speeds over 70 mph on a sandy washboard section of the desert with complete confidence. The FOX shocks simply ate the bumps, and while one could feel it in the cabin, never once did the Raptor feel out of shape. Due to its size, however, one always has to be cognizant of their surrounds as the Raptor is more at home in an open desert than a backwoods trail.The Raptor is, first and foremost, a pickup truck, which means it has to do pickup things. With that said, it will tow up to 6,000-pounds, haul up to 1,000 pounds in its 5.5-foot bed, and rollover anything that’s not more than 11.5 inches in height.
