When looking at the Mazda CX-5 vs Subaru Forester, it's clear two very different design doctrines have made for two very different crossovers. That said? We've enjoyed our time with both.

Mazdas of all stripes are a perennial favorite of auto writers, and the CX-5 is no exception. Here's what Jeffery N. Ross about his time with this agile crossover:

When most people think about a luxurious, sporty crossover, a Mazda might not be the first vehicle that pops into their head — let alone a compact Mazda. But the new 2019 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature should change that, as it solidifies the CX-5 as a top pick in the compact crossover segment.

With the new turbo engine and upscale trim level, the CX-5 Signature is an excellent excuse to overlook smaller crossovers from traditional luxury automakers; yes, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Signature is actually nicer and sportier than some small luxury SUVs.

Now, we should note the Subaru Forester is no slouch either. It's a powerhouse in the segment, and its famous all-wheel drive has made it a favorite of the outdoorsy set for decades. For proof, we offer Derek Shiekhi's take on the venerable competitor:

The Forester is no stranger to off-road driving. Its X-Mode system with Hill Descent Control optimizes a variety of vehicle systems to help the Forester travel over slippery surfaces and steep inclines with ease. Subaru upgraded it for 2019 by giving X-Mode two different settings that help it conquer more types of conditions: Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud.

The Forester Sport also launched from stoplights with a satisfying amount of urgency. What pleased me even more was just how tight the steering felt, and how buttoned-down the suspension seemed. It was as if Subaru built an SUV out of a sport sedan.

Of course, given those opinions, we knew this was going to be a close contest — but those are always the most fun! So check out the video below for a head-to-head comparison, and see which one comes out on top!
