"Work hard, play hard." This is the philosophy that the Toyota Tacoma has always embodied, and is part of why it's been America's best-selling mid-size pickup for 16 years in a row.

Alongside existing customer favorites, a new Tacoma Trail Edition 4x4 and TRD Pro special edition models join the lineup for even more choices and more opportunities to make your own style of fun.

There's a lot of exciting offerings from Tacoma for the new model year, so let's dive in and see what's in store for us.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Models and Trims

Exterior view of the Toyota Tacoma

For the 2022 model year, the Toyota Tacoma is listed as officially offering five trims:

  • SR
  • SR5
  • TRD Sport
  • TRD Off-Road
  • Limited

But, it doesn't end there. Toyota is throwing in two exciting special edition models that really up the ante for adventure seekers: Tacoma TRD Pro and Tacoma Trail Edition.

Like the name says, the Tacoma TRD Pro is loaded with all sorts of goodies from Toyota Racing Development, including a skid plate, TRD-tuned FOX shocks, exclusive wheels, and stronger upper control arms. It also features a 1.5-inch front lift and a 0.5 inch rear lift so it's ready to take on the roughest terrain. You'll also be turning heads with the new and exclusive Electric Lime Metallic paint color as well as new hood graphics and TRD Pro body stamping details.

The Tacoma Trail Edition, which is based on the Tacoma SR5 trim in 4x4 Double Cab configuration, focuses on versatility and convenience while also offering enhanced off-road capabilities. From the factory, the Trail Special Edition is lifted in the front by 1.1 inches, and the standard front air dam is removed to add extra ground clearance. The rear is also upgraded with a 0.5 inch lift and a locking rear differential. And for your camping outings, the truck bed is  equipped with lockable storage (which doubles as a drink or food cooler!) and also a 120V power outlet for lighting or entertainment needs.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Exterior

Tacoma expresses its playful side with 10 available exterior paint colors for 2022:

  • Blue Crush Metallic
  • White
  • Wind Chill Pearl
  • Celestial Silver Metallic
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic
  • Midnight Black Metallic
  • Barcelona Red Metallic
  • Army Green
  • Lunar Rock (Trail Edition Exclusive)
  • Electric Lime Metallic (TRD Pro Exclusive)

In terms of design, the Tacoma draws from Toyota's storied competition history, specifically desert race trucks. The U.S.-based design team brought about strong and defined body proportions along with distinct character lines that produce an unmistakable front fascia. Its athleticism is further emphasized with large overfenders, a high stance, and generous ground clearance.

And depending on your trim selection, the Tacoma can be configured with either an Access Cab or a Double Cab, paired with either a 5-ft or 6-ft bed.

Of course, there's also tons of genuine Toyota accessories to outfit your Tacoma specifically for your work or adventuring needs.

Both of the Tacoma's extended Access Cab and four-door Double Cab configurations have been designed to be the ultimate mobile work/live space, starting with tons of conveniently placed storage solutions and plenty of passenger room.

Comfort is the main priority for everyone, and it goes beyond just seating -- Toyota has included enhanced door seals, a multi-layer acoustic windshield, sound-absorbing headliner, and a floor silencer pad to deliver the quietest passenger experience possible.

With exterior noise filtered out, you can really enjoy your music or podcasts via the Audio Multimedia touchscreen display which supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. For the driver, an available 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display conveys pertinent data, like Toyota Safety Sense features, an inclinometer, and available Multi-Terrain Select settings.

Additional interior highlights include an available 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with 2-way lumbar support, a power rear window, and two USB charge ports in the center console.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Performance

Toyota Tacoma shocks

It goes without saying that the Toyota Tacoma was built to handle the toughest terrain, and at the core of its capability is two engine options: a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6. Both engines can be paired with 4-wheel drive (4WD) and come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission. An optional 6-speed manual transmission is available on select models for those who like to feel even more connected with the road.

My opinion is that horsepower is less relevant for the Tacoma because its prowess really lies in all of the suspension and traction components, but for the record, the 4-cylinder engine produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 engine delivers 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

Tacoma's terrain tackling capability comes from a collection of advanced engineering and hardware, namely an electronically locking rear differential, five-setting Crawl Control, Bilstein Shocks, and Multi-Terrain Select (MTS). MTS features five driver-selectable modes that automatically optimize grip on a variety of surfaces by modulating throttle and traction control functions.

When equipped with the V6 engine, towing capacity for the 2022 Tacoma is rated at 6,800 pounds, and the payload rating is 1,440 pounds.

Fuel economy for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

All Tacomas come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a suite of driver assist functions that include pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, high-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams.

Additionally, the standard Star Safety System provides every Tacoma with even more safety essentials that we've come to expect from Toyota:

  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Anti-lock Braking System
  • Electronic Brake-force Distribution
  • Brake Assist
  • Smart Stop brake override technology
  • Tire Pressure Monitor

All of these safety features plus the natural performance capabilities of Tacoma means you've got a confident and prepared truck for daily use or weekend playtime.
